Leighton Fine Arts, Marlow, England; Private collection, acquired from the above.
Workshop of Frans Francken the Younger (Flemish, 1581-1642) Saint Veronica holding out her veil to Christ on the way to Calvary Oil on panel 15-1/2 x 22 inches (39.4 x 55.9 cm) Signed in monogram lower right: FF. PROVENANCE: Leighton Fine Arts, Marlow, England; Private collection, acquired from the above. The subject of Veronica's veil was a popular one for Frans Francken the Younger, the most gifted member of the Francken dynasty of painters from Antwerp. Over the course of his prolific career, Francken the Younger produced at least a dozen versions of the subject. Known for composing lively religious scenes incorporating dozens of figures in many different attitudes, Francken the Younger nearly always varied the landscape elements and changed the dispositions of his figures from one version to the next so that each work was slightly different. He became a very successful artist and operated a large workshop which made many copies of his original compositions. By 1607, when he just 26 years old, he was able to afford a house in the center of Antwerp where he established his residence and workshop. The present work produced by Francken's studio bears an unidentified panel maker's mark on the verso. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
On panel support with slightly beveled edges. Panel displays slight convex bowing, most apparent at edges and corners. A faint horizontal crack, approximately 7 inches in length, in upper right quadrant. Minor frame abrasion at edges. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Some scattered small dots of loss. A few scattered hairline scratches and small dots of accretion. Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly, streaky in appearance in the sky area. A few small dots of finely applied retouching throughout. Framed Dimensions 21.5 X 28 X 2.75 Inches
